EMILY REEVES BOHL, Associate Director

Emily Reeves Bohl is the Director of Choral Activities at Berkeley Center for the Arts (BCA) at Goose Creek High School. Emily is in her fourth year at GCHS, and her ninth year of teaching music and directing choirs in varied settings. Students under her direction have been selected for regional, state, and national honor choirs. Choirs under her direction have consistently received superior ratings in adjudicated settings and have recently performed at the annual conferences of both SCACDA (2023) and SCMEA (2024).

 

In addition to her duties as Director of Choral Activities, Emily serves as Music Director for theatrical productions at BCA; most recently directing You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown, Rodgers & Hammerstein's Cinderella, The Wizard of Oz, and Little Women. Emily additionally enjoys serving as the the Tri-M Music Honor Society Chapter Advisor, and on the School Improvement Council, Fine Arts Steering Committee, and the Multi-Tiered Support System Team. Emily has previously served as Adjunct Professor at The College of Charleston, where she taught courses in the Master of Arts in Teaching program. Outside the classroom, Emily maintains an active performing schedule throughout South Carolina. She can be heard regularly as staff soprano at the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, and with professional choirs including The King's Counterpoint, Vox Regis, and Cantores Charleston. 

 

Professional affiliations include the National Association for Music Education (SCMEA) where she serves on the Choral Division All-State Committee, Organization of American Kodály Educators (KMESC), and the South Carolina chapter of the American Choral Directors Association (SCACDA), where she serves as the Chair for Treble Repertoire & Resources and Conference Performing Choirs. Emily has served as a clinician in varied settings, most recently conducting the Dorchester District 2 Middle School Honor Choir (2024). She is also active as a presenter, especially in the area of the Kodály concept and its applications to Choral Pedagogy. Recent presentations include the SC ACDA Conference (2022, 2023) and SCMEA Conference (2024). 

Bohl has studied conducting with Dr. Valerie Bullock, Dr. Marshall Forrester, Dr. László Nemes, János Horváth, and Dr. Anna Fűri. Professors of educational methods and musicianship include Maree Hennessy, Gemma Arguelles, Ildikó Thész Salgado, Dr. Nóra Keresztes, and Dr. Valerie Bullock. As a chorister, she has sung with academic and professional ensembles across the United States and abroad in England and Spain. Previous engagements include the soprano solos in Requiem (Fauré), Gloria (Vivaldi), Messiah (Handel), Gloria (Rutter), Magnificat (Bach), and the Oklahoma premiere of Mass no. 1 (Tyberg) with Windsong Chamber Choir. Bohl's music theatre experience includes West Side Story, Into the Woods, Little Women, and Once Upon a Mattress, and operatic work includes Doctor Miracle (Bizet); in addition to numerous scene shows and cabaret-style performances in both disciplines.
